Amazon Prime Video viewers are ‘flat-out disgusted’ with the streaming platform for unexpectedly axing a fan-favourite drama before the storyline concluded.
Fans of Outer Range, which starred Josh Brolin and Imogen Poots, have complained it should be ‘illegal’ to cancel the sci-fi neo-Western series after just two seasons.
They are also devastated the show ended on various cliffhangers – including Perry (Tom Pelphrey) and Amy (Olive Abercrombie) being sent through a hole that transcends time to alter the chain of events in their former realities.
As Tom previously told The Hollywood Reporter, the time-travelling twist at the end of season 2 indicated the characters in Outer Range were living in a ‘multiverse’, which would have been explored in further episodes.
Viewers on Instagram are now fuming they will never know the outcome of the show, with @azgex76 raging: ‘I think I’m done with Amazon shows. They create series after series, leave you on a cliffhanger, and then cancel the whole thing. This show was awesome, I loved both seasons. It was different and unique. You all were an amazing cast and I’m very sad to see yet another show get canceled before its story concluded.’
Echoing their sentiment @tha_arab, stated: ‘This should be made illegal. So sick of streaming services canceling good shows after getting the audience invested, and this show wasn’t good, it was GREAT! What a unique story with amazing execution from everyone involved.’
@anthony.mangiarciana also added: ‘I’m flat out disgusted with@amazonprimeover this series being cancelled. The whole cast was great, makes no sense at all to kill this series. People will be watching the series for DECADES.’
Lamenting over what could have been in future series, @_cursedteen wrote: ‘Seriously sad 😢 loved this weird little gem of a show and was looking forward to getting lost in timelines and voids with you all one more time.’
Unable to hide their disappointment @iamnotcontagious, said: ‘I feel completely crushed. The show was amazing and i believe you all did the absolute best. This shouldn’t have happened it unfortunately it is what it is. I’m sorry you don’t get to see the resolution of this wonderful story. You guys put so much work into it. Thank you nonetheless it was amazing till the end.’
Hollywood star Josh, who played Royal Abbott in Outer Range, agreed with the fans, describing the cancellation as a ‘faux pas’ on Instagram.
He said: ‘As much of a faux pas as I feel that it is for Amazon Prime to cancel our beloved show Outer Range, it will never minimize or detract from how great this idea, this diamond cast, and the hardest working crew I’ve ever encountered have been.’
The 56-year-old added: ‘And thank you most of all to the uber-loyal fans. Along with No Country For Old Men and Sicario, Outer Range is a title among kings I am approached with most. We appreciate you right back. See you…elsewhere.’
Autumn actress Imogen also addressed the genre-bending show’s axe on Instagram which she said ‘changed a lot for me in and out’.
She said: ‘I leave with a full moon heart and a big grin. A very good friend once said to me. “Just keep it weird” and I hold those words close. I’m happy that the show will remain living in its true skin and not become alien unto itself.’
Imogen added: ‘I loved being a part of it and am so incredibly
proud of the work we did. This cast are my soul dingers, true friends, I couldn’t really ever get over standing alongside them.
‘This crew worked so incredibly and consistently and passionately in and around the faces and phases of Covid, strikes, thunderstorms, heat like no other, frozen nights, crazy hours, blonde actresses.’
According to Amazon, Outer Range centred on Royal Abbott (Josh), a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness.
It was first released on the streaming platform in 2022, while its final and second season wrapped in May.
